URBAN BUTTERFLY PROJECT 2016

Run by Butterfly Conservation

The  Urban Butterfly Project has its roots in the Biodiversity in Glasgow (BiG) project 2007-2008.

Newly-trained volunteers recorded 17 species of butterfly in Glasgow. The results were mixed: Some sites had no butterflies but other sites up to 11 species!

A nice added value of the project were several new keen butterfly recorders like Scott Shanks and good relationship with the local council – improving public land for butterflies.

The new Urban Butterfly Project runs from 2015 to 2018 across central Scotland. It will deliver dozens of ID training workshops and work with councils and other bodies to improve urban greenspaces for butterflies, e.g. green roofs in Edinburgh for Northern Brown Argus.

RECORDING METHOD

Very simple – easy to get involved! Just visit an urban greenspace of your choice three times a year and have a look to see what species are there.

Record and report back to BC using iRecord Butterflies app or iRecord ‘Urban Butterfly Survey’ online.
